What’s believed to be the first brewery/pilates studio on South Arm – or possibly Tasmania – is set to go ahead after unanimous approval from Clarence City Council on Monday night.
Councillor James Walker welcoming the development on South Arm Road at Lauderdale, which also includes 22 flats and visitor units, after undertakings from the developer to keep nearby Lauderdale Primary students safe.
“I’m no fan of pilates studios, but if every pilates studio was accompanied by a brewery, it sounds good,” he said.
“Once built it is probably going to be a good demonstration site of a smart, multipurpose use of land and best practice in what community-building looks like.”
Councillor Bree Hunter was enthusiastic in moving the motion to approve.
“This proposal is quite desirable for not only Lauderdale but the South Arm peninsula, Acton, Oakdowns and further afield,” she said.
“It’s something that the area is currently lacking, this type of business and community space.”
Proponent Andrew Lyden also addressed the meeting.
“The residential component offers a high-class duplex-type thing, which is unusual for the area, but will give people an opportunity to have a different sort of lifestyle, a semi-retired lifestyle.”
“Personally, I’ll be making every effort possible to make sure that safety is of the highest priority for children crossing.”
Council also approved a five-storey apartment/office block on Clarence Street at Bellerive.
