Australia’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge over the Mersey River at Warrawee, South of Latrobe most likely won;t be open to the public for at least two to three months at the earliest.

Work on the approaches to the $700,000 bridge has been again halted due to their proximity to an active wedge tailed eagle nest.

Work was delayed while the Parks and Wildlife Services considered geo-technical data requested from the Latrobe Council, with the delays now running over into the wedge tail breeding season.

Latrobe Mayor Peter Freshney says the council is hopeful the bridge can be opened as soon as September, but it could be delayed until as late as December.

Works on tracks leading up to the Western (Railton) side of the bridge have been completed, but more work is needed on approaches on the Latrobe side.
