Hobart’s Hutchins School is set to build a $19 million multipurpose centre after unanimous approval from council’s planning committee on Monday.

The Signature Building will be erected on the school’s existing Nelson Road sports grounds and will include an auditorium, sports hall, offices and gymnasium.

Acting Director City Life Karen Abey told the meeting it will cause some overshadowing of the neighbouring Queenborough Rise aged care precinct.

“It’s noted there is some overshadowing of the site by existing vegetation, but we do expect it will be slightly worse if the proposal goes ahead, but the worst is from 2 pm onwards,” she said.

“Given the orientation of the buildings on the adjacent site, we are satisfied that the impact is not unreasonable.”

Councillor Ryan Posselt moved the motion to approve.

“All kids matter, it doesn’t matter where they come from and what their affluence is,” he said.

“Getting all the kids in one space and giving them a great indoor area to play and gather is really important.”
