A carjacker who hit a driver over the head with a firearm remains at large.
A man was driving his Victoria-plated 2003 Mazda MX5 on Victoria Street at Devonport on Sunday afternoon when an offender approached, attacked him and made off with the vehicle (pictured above).
The victim was left with minor injuries.
Around 15 minutes later police were called to reports of loud bangs on Reibey Street at Latrobe; shots had been fired from the stolen vehicle at a home.
“Police are following a specific line of enquiry and believe the second incident was targeted and between people known to each other,” said Acting Detective Inspector Alex Bonde.
“If anyone has dashcam footage of the black Mazda MX5 travelling between Devonport and Sassafras or in the Latrobe area between 3:25pm and 4:00pm yesterday [Sunday], please contact police.”
Police scrambled the helicopter as part of a significant search but the offender and vehicle, which is black with white wheels, haven’t been found.
The carjacker is described as around 40 years old, 178 cm tall, skinny with a pale complexion, a long gaunt face and goatee.
Police earlier warned he shouldn’t be approached, urging the public to report any sightings on 131 444.
