No speed limit reduction for Leith intersection

July 10, 2024 10:44 am in by

The speed limit at the contentious Leith intersection with the Bass Highway will not be reduced in the foreseeable future and will remain at 110 km/hr.

A history of crashes prompted the State Government to design an overpass, which would have involved compulsory acquisition of several homes near the highway, but backed down on the project after considerable community backlash.

An alternative intersection safety upgrade, including overhead lighting, was completed earlier this year, but both Central Coast and Devonport City Councils made representations to the Government claiming the intersection was only marginally safer and needed a speed limit reduction to 90 km/hr.

The Department of State Growth has now advised there will be no speed limit reduction for now.

However, it says recent junction upgrades will continue to be monitored to determine if any further safety upgrades are required.
