Hundreds of people are expected to march in Devonport on Sunday, along with thousands of others around the nation calling for the Federal Government to change the date of Australia Day.

Now considered Invasion Day by first nations people, the Devonport march is one of three in Tasmania, with rallies and marches also in Launceston and Hobart.

The Devonport march will start at the North West Aboriginal Health Centre in Best Street at 11.30 am and march to Market Square at the Paranaple Centre for a rally at 12 noon.

Event organiser Krystelle Jordan says the Devonport march is now in its fourth year and numbers are increasing every year.

Both Burnie and Devonport City councils will hold their Australia Day awards and citizenship ceremonies not on Sunday in recognition of the date’s cultural sensitivity.

Ms Jordan says she’s hopeful more Coastal councils will follow Devonport and Burnie’s lead in future years.

Invasion Day marches and rallies will also be held in Launceston and Hobart on Sunday.
