Former North-West Greens politician Christine Milne has been inducted onto the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women.
Mrs Milne was born at Latrobe and was a teacher in Devonport and Burnie before entering politics in 1989, when she was elected to the seat of Lyons, which at the time included Port Sorell, Latrobe and Sheffield, now part of Braddon.
She served as a Greens member until 1998, including six years as Greens Leader from 1993-1998.
Mrs Milne was elected a Greens Senator for Tasmania in 2005, becoming the Australian Greens Deputy Leader in 2008 and Leader in 2012 after Bob Brown resigned.
She called time on her own political career three years later.
Tasmanian Greens Senator Nick McKim says Mrs Milne was a groundbreaking political figure who was always ahead of her time.
Senator McKim says her energy, foresight and intellect made her a formidable opponent for those who would destroy nature and a staunch ally for those defending it.
