Hundreds of North-West Coasters have turned out to show their opposition to open water fish-farming trials in Bass Strait, around 12 km off the Coast with a rally in Burnie at the weekend.

The event, as the South Burnie Beach, was organised by North West Tas for Clean Oceans and featured a number of guest speakers, including Greens Senator Nick McKim, Tasmanian director of the Australian Institute Eloise Carr, and Independent Braddon MP Craig Garland.

Mr Garland says the turn-out is evidence of the community’s opposition to fish-farming in Bass Strait.

He says he’s not totally opposed to fish-farming, but it needs to be better regulated and done in the right places.

Mr Garland, says State and Federal Governments need to take the community’s concerns over the issue on board and he urged rally participants to use their vote accordingly in the upcoming Federal Election.
