In the face of stiff opposition over its cost, particularly in Tasmania’s North and North West, tourism and hospitality bodies are out pushing the yes case for a new AFL stadium in Hobart.
Steve Old from the Hospitality Association took to the proposed site of Macquarie Point to argue the case for the stadium for the sake of the economy.
“You only have to see what Richmond-North Melbourne did a couple of years ago, a Friday night game, this place was packed, there were people in our bars, they were walking around the streets, they were taking the ferry across to Bellerive Oval and the crowd was massive, if we can get business events, concerts, AFL football, soccer, you name it, we might even get a JackJumpers game under the roof and get 15,000 Tasmania’s watching.”
Tourism Industry Council Tasmania CEO Amy Hills also insists the AFL stadium will take visitation businesses to the next level.
“We truly believe infrastructure of this type will be transformational for the future of our visitor economy.”
