As Saturday’s Salamanca Market rolls around again, the Stallholders Association is keeping the blowtorch on Hobart City Council over impending rent increases.

The council is in a consultation phase allowing for operators submissions on the topic until this Wednesday April 26th.

Stallholders Association President Emma Hope’s fighting the hike which she claims could double some rents.

“They have not really justified it, some of the things that they are talking about that they need additional funds for such as more staff and activations are not things that the stallholders are calling for, we’d much rather have fair rents and things remain as they are, we are the number one tourist attraction.”

Acting Hobart Lord Mayor Helen Burnett has a contrasting account.

“Through this process we’ve had quite a number of workshops and a lot of interaction with every single stallholder, the information that we’re getting is that well there are things that can benefit the market, already there are many people who have said we are happy with the arrangement that is going forward, so it’s not all what Emma Hope is saying, we are hearing quite different things from the Salamanca stallholders.”
