Australia's brightest television and film stars will come together for the eighth AACTA Awards in Sydney as Sweet Country and Ladies In Black lead the charge already securing three awards each.

Taking home the first round of trophies at an industry luncheon on Monday, the second round will be announced at the official ceremony on Wednesday evening.

The main event host Stephen Curry will be joined by a slew of talented presenters including Rebecca Gibney, Sigrid Thornton and Rodger Corser.

Leading lady Nicole Kidman will walk the red carpet alongside fellow nominees Simon Baker, Nash Edgerton and Deborah Mailman.

Australian singer songwriter Vance Joy will be performing live following his eight-month world tour, as well as five-time ARIA Award-winner Katie Noonan on the back of her recent album collaboration with poet and cartoonist Michael Leunig.

Joel Edgerton's film Boy Erased also starring Kidman, Russell Crowe and rising star Lucas Hedges is up for the Best Film Award.

Another Australian actor-cum filmmaker Simon Baker's directorial debut Breath is also up for the award after taking home Best Sound at the industry luncheon on Monday.

Last year Lion roared ahead of the pack sweeping up all 12 awards it was nominated for, including best film of the year.

However this year the main players are split, with favourite Boy Erased a main contender for the top prize alongside Sweet Country and Ladies In Black.

Sweet Country has been making waves around the world, winning awards at international film festivals in Venice and Toronto.

The other major winner on Monday was Ladies In Black starring Rachael Taylor which took home three out of the five categories it was nominated for including Best Costume Design and Best Original Music Score.

Last year's ceremony was in the wake of the spiralling #MeToo movement and just days after Geoffrey Rush stepped down from his role as president of the body following a newspaper story he has since challenged in court.
