Work has started on the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre fish farm trials in Bass Strait, 12km North-East of Burnie.
Blue CRC started installing marine aquaculture infrastructure yesterday for the purposes of a research project for an initial 8-month trial, despite considerable community opposition, which includes well-attended rallies along the Coast.
Braddon Independent MP Craig Garland says the the eco-system in Bass Strait is thriving, with the trials potentially putting it at risk.
Mr Garland says more than 80% of submissions during the public consultation period were opposed to the trials and the fact they’re going ahead shows total ignorance of what the community wants.
