Tasmania Police is reminding boaters to take a few simple steps to ensure they are prepared before heading onto the water, following a recent marine safety operation at Port Sorell.
Western Marine Police conducted compliance checks on recreational vessels during a two-hour operation on Sunday, resulting in 15 infringement notices for inadequate or non-compliant safety equipment.
Police say two of the most common offences detected involved failing to carry, properly store, keep ready for immediate use, or maintain mandatory safety equipment, which attracts a $426 fine, as well as failing to maintain life jackets in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications, which is a $213 fine.
Boaters are being encouraged to check the condition of their life jackets and other safety equipment like flares before each trip.
