Body cams on the way for council compliance staff

Burnie City Council officers who deal with the public in compliance enforcement, including parking staff, could soon be wearing body cameras, following the lead of some other Tasmanian councils, including Devonport.

The Meander Valley Council is the latest Tasmanian council to introduce body worn cameras for compliance officers.

Burnie says it’s committed to introducing the cameras, but no time-line has been revealed yet.

Devonport introduced the body cams several years ago, as a result of several incidents with members of the public.

The introduction coincided with the implementation of protocols in consultation with Tasmania olice.

Members of staff using the body cams are required to undertake training to ensure guidelines and protocols are followed.
