More than 1000 career and volunteer firefighters will flock to Melbourne in September to tackle the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb, including dozens from Tasmania and the North-West Coast.

22 Tasmanian brigades will be represented in the charity fundraiser, which sees firefighters testing their fitness by climbing 28 stories if stairs at the Crown Metropol building, carrying 25 kg of full turnout gear and breathing apparatus.

Firefighters from Devonport, Port Sorell, Latrobe, Burnie, Claude Road, Sheffield, Ridgley, Waratah, Somerset, Forth Valley, and Ulverstone are busy fundraising ahead of the event.

Devonport firefighter Marlon Von Moger, arguably one of the fittest in Tasmania, will be aiming to win the event for the third year in a row, after having also finished second outright in 2022.

The event raises funds for the 000-Foundation, to improve support services, fund research, remove stigmas and raise awareness of cancer and mental health issues, especially for those within the Emergency Service and Defence communities.
