The State Emergency Service is asking home owners in Tasmania’s north and northwest to start preparing for their properties for damaging winds and heavy rain later this week.
90 kilometre an hour east north easterly winds, an unusual direction, puts trees in wet ground at risk of blowing over on Wednesday afternoon and into Thursday.
Some flooding is also seen as a possibility.
This is part of a stement from SES Acting Director, Leon Smith.
“Now is the time to prepare your property, and complete any of those nagging maintenance jobs that you’ve been putting off.”
“At the moment, advice from the Bureau of Meteorology means we’re expecting the high winds to begin on Wednesday afternoon and continue overnight before easing on Thursday morning.”
“We’re also expecting heavy rain to hit northern Tasmania on Thursday, in line with the wet weather event that’s been predicted for other Australian states this week.”
“It seems as though we could see significant rainfall through to Friday, and this means it’s likely that some rivers around Northern Tasmania will rise.”
“Tasmanians need to be aware that this weather is coming, and they need to prepare accordingly.”
“This means knowing your flood risk and understanding whether your street and home are prone to flooding.”
