Developer says thank you for support, but calls for change

The proponents of a $40 million shopping centre in Devonport, which has been knocked back by the Tasmanian Planning Commission, have thanked the people of Devonport for their support.

Known as Stony Rise Village and proposed by Sydney developer Tipalea Partners, the plan was passed by the Devonport City Council, but knocked back because it doesn’t meet the requirements of the old Cradle Coast Regional Land Use Strategy.

Tipalea Partners CEO Scott Spanton has taken out a full-page newspaper advertisement saying while disappointed, it is encouraging to see widespread support for the development, which would have generated 1100 jobs during construction.

Mr Spanton says Tasmania deserves a better planning system which works for everyone.

Planning Minister and Braddon MP Felix Ellis agrees, and says a review is underway, labelling the strategy as a handbrake on jobs, while Premier Jeremy Rockliff says his Government will look at the rules which led to the decision and take action to ensure commonsense prevails.

Mr Spanton has called on the decision makers to ensure there is action and not just words, with the State Government and councils working together.
