Doctors warn of looming crisis

The Royal Australian College of GPs is warning of dire consequences for the nation if the Albanese Government doesn’t address inadequate Medicare rebates for doctors.

A recent survey found nearly half of GPs say it’s financially unsustainable for them to continue, and just 3% believe current Medicare rebates are sufficient.

As of earlier this year Tasmania had more than 60 GP vacancies, around a third of those in Greater Hobart.

College President Karen Price is among those attending a crisis summit in Canberrra today.

“We’re in this crisis because Australia’s general practice system has been stripped of funding and support for decades,” she said. 

“This has also led to the GP workforce shortage and decline of medical graduates choosing general practice as a career.”
