Domestic violence on the rise in the North-West and West

Shocking new data from Tasmania Police shows the North-West Coast has the highest domestic violence rate in the state, with Burnie families most at risk of violence.

The data from the Tasmania Police 2023 family-related dispatch per 1000 population shows an average of 14.7 calls to police per thousand on the North-West Coast are related to domestic violence.

In Burnie, it’s even higher than the Coastal average, with 17.5 incidents per thousand and has gone up 56 per cent on the previous year.

It’s more than triple the rate in Hobart, at 5.9 calls per thousand and significantly more than Launceston at 12.1.

The West Coast, Circular Head and Central Coast municipalities were also in the top 10 statewide.

The revealing data is expected to see increased calls for family violence victim support for the region.
