It’s a case of back to the future for the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia’s Coastal sittings, which will return to Burnie from late August.
The court will return to its former premises at the Burnie Supreme Court, with this month’s sittings being heard in Launceston.
The Family Court was previously based in the Burnie Court Complex, but was forced to vacate in late 2019 with the appointment of new Coastal justice Tamara Jago to ease the backlog of Supreme Court matters.
The court moved to the Burnie Arts and Function Centre, but was again forced to move recently due to renovations as part of the $20 million Burnie Cultural Precinct redevelopment, moving matter to Launceston.
The Launceston move met with considerable criticism from all sides of politics and Coastal councils, with the Burnie City Council working with the court to find a new Burnie location.
The Chief Justice of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, William Alstergren says the return to the Burnie Court Complex is only temporary, but thanks Tasmanian Chief Justice Alan Blow and Justice Jago for their understanding and co-operation.
