The great Australian frozen potato chip shortage is over.
Harvesting has begun in Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia, with around 600,000 tonnes of potatoes expected to be harvested on the North-West Coast alone for processing by McCains at Smithton and Simplot at Ulverstone.
The recent shortage was caused by a poor planting season last year with flooding and extremely wet conditions making paddocks too wet to plant.
Although tonnages are slightly down again this year, a shortage isn’t being anticipated.
However, you might have to pay a little extra for frozen chips at the supermarket, with growers currently involved in price negotiations with processors.
