The speed limit on a contentious 1.6 km stretch of the Bass Highway near Leith will be lowered.
The Department of State Growth say the current 110 km/hr limit will be reduced to 90 km/hr from next week.
The department says it’s monitored traffic since improvements were made to the intersections with Braddons Lookout Road and Short Street last year and says while the crash history is low, the severity can be high.
It says despite the improvements, which cost almost $ 5 million, the risk of serious crashes remains.
Both the Devonport and Central Coast Councils have lobbied for a speed reduction to the 1.6 km stretch.
The Department says the speed reduction will add around 12 seconds to the trip for traffic passing through.
