The latest stage in the Coastal Pathway between Cooee and Wynyard will be officially opened on Thursday.

The 13.2 km section of the project has been funded with $13.9 million from the State Government and $1.9 million from the Waratah-Wynyard and Burnie Councils.

Work on the latest section of the pathway started in September last year and includes penguin-proof fencing to protect little penguins and reinforcements to prevent coastal erosion in seven areas.

Today’s opening ceremony will be held at Anzac Park at Somerset, with a free community barbecue from 10.30 am to midday.

A group ride for cyclists from the the University of Tasmania Cradle Coast Campus at West Point is also being organised by the Bicycle Network Tasmania to arrive in time for the official opening.

When completed, the Coastal Pathway will stretch 110 km from Latrobe to Wynyard.

Two of the missing links to complete the project, from Chasm Creek to Burnie and the Ulverstone to Penguin segment are also the most challenging from an engineering perspective, and will require significant funding to become a reality.
