Good news for city cyclists – the Hobart City Council has approved a development application for new bike lanes and signage across four streets in the CBD.
Argyle, Campbell, Liverpool and Bathurst Streets will be given new separated bicycle pathways within the existing carriageway, but this will result in the relocation of on-street parking.
Alderman Simon Behrakis says that while he voted in favour of the application, he’s concerned the changes will cause increased bottlenecking on major arterial roads.
“While I am supportive of improving public and active transport in the city, it is crucial that we respond to the needs of Hobartians and the reality is that the majority of road users in our city require a car,” Mr Behrakis said.
“Ultimately however, Council had limited discretions to assess this from a traffic perspective in the Planning Committee.”
