Coastal sports fans will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the atmosphere for Wednesday night’s historic women’s soccer World Cup between England and the Australian Matildas, with events being organised in Burnie, Penguin and Devonport.
The Burnie United Soccer Club will be showing the match live on the big TV screen, as will the Penguin Surf Life Saving Club, while Devonport’s Market Square will become Matildas-Central with the Devonport City Council showing the match on the large screen in the square.
The Devonport City Strikers won’t be hosing anything at their clubrooms, instead encouraging members and supporters to join the crowd at Market Square.
Pre-game entertainment, including live music, soccer nets and balls, and prizes for best-dress Matildas fan will start at 6 pm, with the match at 8 pm.
Devonport Mayor Alison says she hoping the square will become a sea of green and gold, with a party atmosphere planned, and although there will be fire pits and a sausage sizzle to keep warm, she’s advising people to rug up.
