The H5 strain of Bird Flu has landed on the Coast’s shore, with authorities today confirming positive test results of the disease in a deceased sea bird.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania responded to a suspected case after being alerted to the carcass of a Brown Skua in the Rocky Cape National Park by staff from the Parks and Wildlife Service who have been undertaking active surveillance of coastal areas.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said Tasmania had been preparing for the arrival of H5 Bird Flu for some time and was ready to respond, stating there is no evidence of an outbreak or detection in commercial poultry farms at this time.
