The CEO of Tasmania’s Royal Agricultural Society is welcoming another milestone for the showgrounds development, although construction cost blowouts could see the budget balloon to $60 million.
Glenorchy City Council has this week endorsed stage 1 of the revamp.
It doesn’t include a proposed social housing development which will be the subject of a future application.
Construction will see the next three Royal Hobart Shows move to the regatta grounds.
Scott Gadd says it’ll be worth the wait as the existing decrepit infrastructure is demolished.
“The idea is to consolidate all our existing pavilions under one roof, so a huge pavilion built around a courtyard…and a brand new arena,” he said.
“The next step is to get that zoning amendment through to allow for housing, so hopefully we’ll have that by the end of the year; we can get up to 450 as we’ve mapped it out. That will depend on market conditions at the time.”
