Smoke alert for Latrobe and surrounds

The Tasmania Fire Services has issued a smoke alert for Latrobe and surrounding districts today.

The smoke is emanating from a rubbish fire on the landfill face at the Dulverton Regional Waste Management Centre.

Fire crews from Latrobe and Devonport responded to a call after 6 am this morning to find the tip face on fire.

The fire services says as some of the fire is burning underground, some digging will be required to fully extinguish the fire.

The operation will generate smoke, but the fire service says there’s no threat to the general public, although people are being asked to avoid the area.
