A Devonport councillor and former mayor has written to the State Government asking it to come to the rescue of the trans-Mersey ferry.
The Devonport City Council last week opted not to buy the Eastern pontoon required for a service to resume, which is in need of overhaul, but Councillor Steve Martin says there’s no better time for the State Government to step in.
Councillor Martin says the Mersey River is about to undergo significant change for the better and any funds spent on restoring 160 year-old ferry service will be an investment in the future.
He says the service could link up the new Devonport Novotel hotel and Living City, as well as the proposed Don River Railway steam train mainline service to Devonport with the Quaylink development for the new Spirits of Tasmania, the proposed Mersey Yacht Club development, and the berth for the historic ketch Julie Burgess, as well as river cruises.
