Tributes flow for Ulverstone constable

Floral tributes have appeared outside the Ulverstone Police Station following the the tragic death of local 57 year-old constable Keith Smith, who was shot and killed in the line of duty at North Motton on Monday.

Constable Smith was killed when he and a fellow officer attended the residence to serve a court-ordered warrant to repossess the home.

The loss of Constable Smith is being felt far and wide, with tributes flowing from the Premier and police and community leaders, particularly in the North-West.

Constable Smith, who had served predominantly in the North and North-West for the 25 years is being remembered for his dedication.

In a sad touch of irony, Tuesday was also the first ever National Police Legacy Day, honouring the families of those killed on duty, with the Sydney Opera House illuminated with images to mark the day.

Police Association of Tasmania President Shane Tilley says the loss is being felt across not just by the police force and the community, but also police right across the country.

Meanwhile, A 46 year-old North Motton man is under police guard in the Launceston General Hospital, as he recovers from surgery, after being injured when police returned fire on Monday.

Charges are yet to be laid.
