Volunteer firey charged with lighting fire

A volunteer firefighter has been charged after dozens of grass and bushfires were lit in northern NSW last year.

Police and the Rural Fire Service have been investigating the 25 fires deliberately lit in the Tingha area between August and December.

As a result, a 19-year-old man was charged at Inverell Police Station on Friday night with intentionally causing a fire and being reckless as to its spreading.

The charge relates to a bushfire in September.

He has been released on bail to face Inverell Court on April 13.
