The $12 million cost of sinking the HMAS Darwin off Tasmania's East Coast and ongoing annual $600,000 of management funding are too rich for the state government's blood, leading it to abandon the idea.
The Commonwealth offered the state the former navy ship to create a dive attraction.
Treasurer Peter Gutwein has identified more pressing areas of need.
"Funding the Darwin is not a priority, we'd much prefer to spend any additional funding on either health, education or other infrastructure that would provide a better return."
Tasmania's Tourism Industry Council is supportive of the government's decision.
