Optimistic farmers

Tasmania's farmers have emerged as the most upbeat in Australian agriculture and are far more confident than their counterparts interstate, according to the latest Rabobank Rural Confidence Survey.

The agrifinance operator found a third of this state's farmers plan to increase investment in their operation in the year ahead, compared to 19 percent nationally.

Strong commodity prices and good seasonal conditions have underpinned the Tasmanian result, although the state's perennially dry south-east has remained a challenge.

Overall, just over a quarter of Tassie farmers are expecting improved economic conditions in the next year - more than double the previous survey, while only 8 percent have a negative outlook.

But there's a distinct pattern in the report, where north of Ross and Campbell Town is having an outstanding season, whereas the south-east and east are battling dry conditions.
