Regional Tas shines at tourism awards

Westrailway

The state's often overlooked West Coast has been recognised for its fast growing tourism sector.

Four operators from the region including the West Coast Wilderness Railway and Gordon River Cruises won gold at the 2019 Tasmanian Tourism Awards at Wrest Point last night.

There were also 3 winners from the East Coast, as well as the usual suspects from Hobart and Launceston.

"The high calibre of Tasmania’s tourism industry was on display, with award winners spanning the length and breadth of the State," Premier Will Hodgman said.

"Congratulations to all of this year’s Tasmanian Tourism Awards winners for again setting the very high benchmark that makes our tourism industry the best in the country. The quality of our attractions and experiences outside is what sets us apart from anywhere else, and our tourism operators are the driver behind the success of our visitor economy," he said.

Assistant Federal Minister for Regional Tourism Jonathon Duniam is delighted with the success of less well-known parts of Tasmania

"Getting people out of the major population centres is critical to the future of our sustainable tourism," he said.
