Police local

Forensic officers remain at the confronting scene of a triple fatality on the Bass Highway at Carrick between Illawarra Road and Oaks Road.

Police say a Launceston-bound white Toyota Prado apparently crossed to the wrong side of the Highway into the path of a silver Mazda BT50 ute.

The Prado's driver and two male occupants of the other vehicle died at the scene; police haven't released the ages of the victims.

Two children aged four years and nine months in the rear seat of the Prado were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.'

A tragedy has unfolded on the Bass Highway southwest of Launceston on Wednesday morning, with three people killed in a two-vehicle smash at Carrick.

A number of others involved were treated by paramedics.

The road will likely be closed between Illawarra and Oaks Roads for hours; diversions are in place.

Meantime in South Burnie Massey Greene Drive will also be blocked for a considerable amount of time, after a truck rollover around 200 metres from Old Surrey Road.

The driver wasn't seriously hurt.
