Virgin cutbacks

Virgin

Tasmania's set to lose more flights as Virgin Australia drastically scales back services.

Virgin had previously cut services by 50 per cent; that's now being ramped up to a 90 per cent reduction, as well as the temporary grounding of 125 aircraft.

The airline is standing down 8000 of its 10,000 workers and Tigerair is being suspended, effective immediately, in response to border restrictions being rolled out by state and territory governments around the country.

Virgin's Launceston flights will be suspended from midnight on Friday until at least mid June, while Hobart's Tiger flights are suspended with no time frame on if or when they'll resume.

CEO Paul Scurrah has told the Stock Exchange they'll maintain services to 17 destinations for critical freight and logistics.

"We plan to return Tigerair and Virgin Australia to the skies as soon as it is viable to do so, however, I am mindful that how we operate today may look different when we get to the other side of this crisis," he said.
