Beating Wombat mange

Tasmania's efforts in supporting the wombat are being cheered on.

Much of that cheering is coming from the state government which professes to remaining a keen backer of the work by UTAS to control sarcoptic mange, a mite infestation that causes an excruciating death for wombats.

The University's trials of insecticide Bravecto are described as producing promising results, offering three months protection and breaking the mite's life cycle.

Before the fairly recent arrival of Bravecto, treatment with Cydectin only protected the wombat for a week.

Primary Industries Minister Guy Barnett is also applauding DPIPWE's work and the help of volunteers in tackling mange.

He reports wombat numbers have increased over the past 35 years and they are not at risk of becoming threatened.
