A Victorian man has been fined for not wearing a mask at Burnie Airport.

Police were undertaking COVID compliance duties on Monday at about 8:30am when they spotted the 51-year-old enter the terminal without using a mask or face covering.

Officers say he was holding one, but continually refused direction to put it on.

It eventually resulted in the man being slapped with a $774 infringement notice.

The requirement for mandatory wearing of masks at all Tasmanian Airports and flights to and from Tasmania was brought in by Public Health Director Mark Veitch on January 22nd.

A further direction which included reasons for exemptions was issued last Friday.

Police allege the male did not have an exemption and didn't meet the conditions to temporarily remove his mask.

“We have seen a high compliance with COVID rules on the North West Coast since the COVID-19 pandemic began," Inspector Gary Williams said.

“Our main priority is to educate the public, but on occasion it is necessary to take action against those individuals whose behaviour puts others at risk.

“Now is not the time to become complacent and we continue to seek the support of the community to keep all of us safe.”
