A justice department probe will get underway into a riot at Risdon Prison's medium security wing on Wednesday night.
Heavily-armed tactical officers swooped on the East Derwent Highway facility after at least two cells were set on fire.
Acting Director of Prisons David Jackson says staff had the flames out quickly and no one was hurt.
He says inmates will be relocated to other parts of the prison due to the damage and the perpetrators will face disciplinary action.
Witnesses have described loud bangs, yelling and screaming at the facility over several hours before police took away around 10 inmates.
Ambulance Tasmania and the Tasmania Fire Service also attended but the TFS has declined to comment.
