Local Government Minister asked to sack disgraced councillor

Darren Fairbrother

Local Government Minister Nic Street has been asked to use his discretionary power to sack disgraced Waratah-Wynyard councillor Darren Fairbrother (pictured).

Last month a Burnie Magistrate found him guilty of exposing himself to a woman and her son on a beach  at Boat Harbour last year.
Fairbrother has refused to step down, as he doesn't have and the council can't sack him under the current Local Government Act, despite passing a no confidence motion in him at last night's monthly council meeting.
Much of the first hour and half of Monday night's monthly council meeting was taken up with a barrage of questions and statements from the public gallery and councillors around the table with the matter, with Fairbrother defiantly refusing to answer any questions, before walking out of the meeting.

Deputy Mayor Mary Duniam successfully moved a motion to lobby the State Government to change the act, but in the meantime to remove Fairbrother because it's what the community wants
