A direct shipping link between Devonport and New Zealand is set to start next month.
Aquaculture feed manufacturer BioMar at Wesley Vale is behind the move to initiate the service, shipping its high quality feed directly to New Zealand instead of transiting through the Port of Melbourne.
BioMar produces feed for salmon, trout, prawns and other farmed marine species, after refurbishing the former Wesley Vale timber veneer mill two years ago, now employing dozens of locals.
The new direct Devonport-New Zealand service will initially offload BioMar feed at Nelson, Bluff and Lyttleton ports with the potential to expand to more.
Once the service is fully established, it's expected other Tasmanian exporters will take the opportunity to get their products and cargo directly to New Zealand markets.
