How to Prepare Your Body for the Ultimate GTA6 Gaming Marathon

The wait is finally over. After 13 long years, Grand Theft Auto VI is set to drop on 19 November, and the excitement is reaching a fever pitch. Millions of fans are already clearing their schedules, with a recent poll revealing that over half of gamers plan to book annual leave just to play.

But while you might have your snacks sorted and your out-of-office email turned on, there is one crucial thing you are probably forgetting: your physical health.

While you might not realise it, settling in for a marathon gaming session feels relaxing, but it takes a surprising toll. Your body is locked in one position, your shoulders are hunched, and your hands are working in overdrive. Every mission in Vice City requires thousands of rapid movements from your fingers. Do that for hours on end, and you are looking at stiff wrists, tight forearms, and a very real condition known as “thumb-DOMS” the next day.

To make sure gamers survive launch week without the aches and pains, PureGym personal trainer and Royal Air Force veteran David Hope has stepped in. As an avid gamer himself, David understands that hitting the gym on drop-day is simply not going to happen. Instead, he has designed an official pre-game thumb routine and a couch workout you can do right in your living room.

The Pre-Game Thumb Workout

Just like you would warm up before a heavy gym session, you need to prep your hands before you pick up the controller. David recommends doing these three quick moves before you start playing and again when you finish. Repeat each exercise ten times.

  • Fingertip Touches: Hold your hand up with your fingers straight. Touch the tip of your thumb to each fingertip in turn, going from your index finger to your pinky and back again. This improves coordination and prevents stiffness.
  • Finger Curls: Start with your fingers spread wide. Slowly curl them into a tight fist with your thumb wrapped around the outside. Open them back up and stretch wide.
  • Finger Push-Ups: Press the fingertips of both hands against the floor and push your weight into them. This builds strength in the tendons that control your hand movements.

Your thumbs might be ready for action, but your back and legs need attention, too. Taking a quick break every few hours will keep your blood flowing and prevent that sluggish feeling.

  • The Warm-Up: Get your heart rate up with 30 seconds of jumping jacks and arm circles. Stand up and do some controlled leg swings to wake up your lower body.
  • The Midway Break: Try doing ten Bulgarian split squats by resting one foot on the couch behind you and lowering your back knee toward the floor. Follow this with ten glute bridges on the floor to reactivate the muscles that switch off while you sit.
  • The Cool-Down: When you save your game, do a kneeling couch stretch for your hips and a doorway chest stretch. Placing your forearm against a door frame and gently stepping forward will undo the hunch of leaning toward your screen.

As David points out, you do not need to give up your gaming marathon to look after your health. Treat the GTA 6 launch like an endurance event. Warm up, take quick movement breaks, and stretch at the end. That way, you can rule the streets of Vice City without paying for it the next morning.
