Calls are mounting for a second cat shelter to be built on the North-West Coast.
Cat management falls under the control of local councils under the Cat Management Act, but the Cradle Coast Authority says the region’s councils don’t have the resources to implement cat curfews and other measures.
Both the RSPCA and Just Cats say the North West Coast needs a second shelter to supplement the RSPCA’s Spreyton shelter, which they say should be funded by the State Government.
Cats are currently being transported to Launceston from the North-West and West Coasts to Launceston because the Spreyton facility is full.
Just Cats founder Rachel Beech regularly hosts cat adoption expos on the North-West Coast and says the region desperately needs somewhere for people to surrender their pets if they can’t manage them, as well as for people wanting to re-home or adopt a feline friend.
