E-scooters nowhere to be seen on the Coast

E-scooters for hire won’t been seen anytime soon on the North-West Coast.

Burnie hosted a trial of 150 of Beams’ distinctive purple scooters in 2022, but the company withdrew the service last June, saying at the time, demand in Burnie was limited – even in the warmer months.

Beam said it would pause its Burnie operations and re-consider a summer service, which has since failed to eventuate.

In June last year, on the same day Beam announced its Burnie pause, the Devonport City Council announced the company had been approved for a 12-month trial, restricted to the city’s foreshore and Don Reserve shared pathways.

It was believed at the time the trial would likely start this summer, which hasn’t eventuated either.

The council says it’s been told by Beam the company was not going to start the Devonport trial while the Burnie operation was on hold.

Beam has been contacted for comment.

Earlier this week, Beam was granted an exclusive 12-month operational licence for Hobart following on from a successful trial period.
