Tasmania’s first red bench to raise awareness about domestic violence has been unveilled at Ulverstone.
The Red Bench programme is an initiative of the domestic violence support organisation the Red Rose Foundation, with the message of taking a seat to take a stand to end domestic violence.
The Ulverstone bench is situated in Reibey Street outside Oliver’s Bakery, where an existing bench has been painted red and has a plaque attached where people can learn more about the Res Rose Foundation’s key messages on domestic violence awareness and prevention.
The benches are intended to be installed in public locations and act as a conversation starter.
Central Coast Mayor Cheryl Fuller says the council hopes the bench will lead the community to have conversations about domestic violence and its impact on victims, victim survivors, their families and many sections of the community.
She says three more red benches will also be initiated within the municipality at Leith, Sulphur Creek and Penguin.
