Tasmanian teachers leaving the classroom

Tasmanian teachers are quitting at a record rate.

The Department of Education’s latest Annual Report has revealed that 271 Tasmanian educators walked away from the profession over the past year – up 49 per cent on the year prior.

Stress leave claims have also reached an all-time high.

Australian Education Union Tasmania President David Genford telling Tasmania Talks, there needs to be a focus on recruitment and retention.

“What we’ve seen over the last couple of years is that the teacher shortage has impacted our schools and increased the workload on our teachers and our support staff,” he said.

“It’s a back to back increase of 50% leaving each year.”
